๐ The Life of a Small Business Owner: No “Off Hours” — Just On Call ๐ผ
When Does the Day Really End?
If you think owning a small business means you clock in from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and then unplug — think again.
For many of us running local services in Sussex County, Delaware, the workday blends into the night. And when you're committed to taking care of properties, customers, and community, your phone doesn’t really have an “off” button.
4:30 A.M. and the Phone Rings…
This past weekend, we got a trash can service request at 4:30 in the morning. Yes — 4:30 A.M. A customer, likely assuming they'd reach voicemail, was shocked when a real person picked up on the other end.
"Oh my goodness, I didn't think anyone would answer! I'm so sorry!" she said.
We assured her there was no need to apologize. At Property Tenders LLC and Can Cowboys, we love hearing from people interested in our services — whether it's a midday quote or a before-sunrise call about trash placement.
This Is What Small Business Really Looks Like
What most folks don’t see is what happens behind the scenes:
✅ Creating a blog post at 2 a.m.✅ Uploading photos from a property check while waiting for your coffee
✅ Drafting a contract while sitting in the carpool line
✅ Responding to social media messages before you’ve had your first sip of water
✅ Recording a Reel during a 5-minute lunch break
✅ Fixing a camera battery on the way to dinner
Being a small business owner in Delmarva is more than a job — it’s a way of life. And that’s what makes it so rewarding.
