Season of Small Business Support: Our Weekend in Cape Charles, VA

As the holiday season quickly approaches, the Property Tenders family took a much-needed break from phones, emails, and winter prep to enjoy some quality time together. We headed down to Cape Charles, Virginia, and along the way we were reminded of something important:
Small businesses are the heartbeat of every community—especially this time of year.

A Weekend Focused on Family, Local Flavor, and Community Appreciation

While exploring Cape Charles, we visited places that exemplify what it means to truly value customers and support fellow small business owners. One standout was Cape Charles Brewing Company, where we enjoyed fantastic craft beer, great food, and service that genuinely felt like home.

We also stopped into several small bakeries throughout the town—shops filled with character, handmade treats, and owners who were grateful for every single customer who walked through the door.

As many coastal and tourist communities begin to slow down for the winter, small mom-and-pop businesses still face the same overhead:

  • Insurance

  • Rent

  • Heat

  • Inventory

  • Staffing

These owners remain open not because the crowds are steady, but because they love their community and the customers who support them year-round.

Why Supporting Small Businesses Matters More This Time of Year

This season, our family is making it a priority to shift our gift-giving toward local shops, local foods, and local experiences. Buying a gift certificate, a handmade product, or a unique treat from a small shop means more than most people realize.

You’re not supporting a corporation —
You’re supporting a family, a dream, and a business that pours its heart into serving its customers.

We encourage everyone in Sussex County and beyond to take the time to:
✔ Stop in
✔ Say hello
✔ Get to know the owners
✔ Explore what makes their business special

This is often when they need your support the most — and they’re always happy to share recommendations, stories, and local insights.

Our Favorite Stops on the Eastern Shore

If you’re planning a trip down the Eastern Shore, here are a few spots we highly recommend:

๐Ÿž Mason Avenue Bakery — Cape Charles, VA

A must-visit for unique bakery goods and friendly faces. Fresh pastries, great coffee, and a welcoming atmosphere make it a perfect morning stop.

☕ Caboose Coffee & Creamery — Parksley, VA

Heading back up Route 13? Take the exit into Parksley. While there, visit the Eastern Shore Railway Museum, then walk over to Caboose Coffee & Creamery.
Whether you're craving a fresh cup of coffee, homemade baked treats, or a famous Nightingale Ice Cream sandwich — it’s worth the detour.
